As the recording methods of video cameras have steadily progressed over time from analogue to digital, allowing direct interface with personal computers, different manufacturers have adopted different proprietary formats which they use to encode their video and present it to the user. On occasion, the manufacturer will enable the camera behave like an external storage drive and allowing the computer user to simply navigate to its location in their file browser, and then drag or copy the files to whichever place they would like. Most times though, there is software which comes packaged along with the camera and contains a program specific to your line of camera.

I have to admit I'm no computer geek. When something goes wrong, I usually have to call someone to fix it and it costs me a lot of money. When my computer started to experience random freezes, I just used Regtask and now it works normally again.

My computer is 5 years old and runs extremely slow now. I was a bit sceptical about using Regtask, but just decided to give it a shot in the end and it worked out fantastically for me.

Through this program, additional functionality is often added, such as the ability to add notations at certain points in the video, add effects, do basic video editing and things of that nature. The type of camera and software which is associated with the file we are discussing here are both manufactured and produced by the Sony Corporation, which has a hand in software, video games, music players, camcorders, and more. Sony's Handycam is an example of a long running and very popular camcorder which uses the Sony Motion Picture Browser program for viewing and downloading video.

As the program's name suggests, the primary function of this software is to browse and view footage you have captured with your Sony camcorder. There is little to no editing capability in this software, so if your goal is to chop up, reorganize, and polish the video with effects for a professional quality presentation then you'll be required to convert the video into a different, non proprietary format which is compatible across multiple software platforms, or specifically the editing program you'll be using at the very least. Luckily, Sony had the good sense to include a conversion function in the software by default. Before conversion, if you actually copy the files from your camcorder's local storage and view them in your file browser you'll notice that they are labeled as .m2t files. In addition to this file, another file is imported to your computer along with it. This is the .moff file, and it contains certain indexing, time-stamp, date, and other information which is decoded by the Motion Picture Browser software when the .m2t video file is played. This can be confusing to some users, but as long as you understand the purposes of the separate file, you'll be fine. It should also be noted that on some digital recording equipment manufactured by Sony that's intended for use with their Motion Picture Browser software may have a .modd file instead of a .moff file, but their purposes are essentially the same. Additionally, it is not necessary to have the companion .moff or .modd file along with the .m2t video file for playback; the time and date information is purely supplementary.
The built in conversion tool converts to the MPEG-2 format, and is very widely compatible with video players and editors alike across different platforms and even operating systems. Sony is notorious for using in their software formats which are proprietary and not especially compatible with other programs. This forces people who do want the additional flexibility of having their files be completely portable to go through the time consuming additional step of video conversion. If you need a new copy of the Motion Picture Browser software to put these files to use, it can be found with a little persistent searching on the Sony website, and is available for download at no cost to you. This software must be used to view Sony video files before the conversion process, so the Microsoft Windows operating system will be unable to recognize the file until it is installed.
If you have inadvertently mixed up 2 .moff files with their respective video files, the time and date information may not display correctly. If you are sure you are using the correct .moff or .modd file but the displayed information is wrong, garbled, or missing then it is possible that the file has been somehow damaged or corrupted. To help eliminate this possibility, re-transfer the video from your camcorder to your PC, and the companion file will be copied along with it.
